20 Years in the Classroom!

When I graduated from college, I soon became a certified classroom teacher. Most of my experience was in kindergarten. I loved this wonderful age group, because I could explore with them. They were excited about learning!

One of my favorite times in the classroom was morning journal time. First thing in the morning, I invited my students to freely write. I also adored our circle time. After attendance, we gathered together to listen to one another and share. In addition, I truly enjoyed group storytelling and discovery centers. As I look back on these experiences, I realize that these practices invited me to playfully engage with both my students and life! As it turns out, they are the things I enjoy most in my own life.

I vividly remember taking my son to preschool next door and then heading into my classroom. Afterwards, I picked him up and let him spend time in my space, while I prepared for the next day’s lessons. I absolutely loved having his precious spirit in my classroom. Soon after these days, I was able to be home with him as his teacher for a year before he headed off to kindergarten.

I was a classroom teacher for about 20 years. Today, I still see or hear from my former students and their parents. They remind me of their favorite times in the classroom. Most of all, my students tell me they remember me singing to them. Their parents talk about that time, too. One thing I also hear is how much they felt safe, loved, and nurtured. It fills my heart to know that I have given so many children the gifts I have so joyfully given to my own children.
