My mother bought a set of VHS tapes from QVC years ago, probably mostly because she was captivated by Zumba’s creator, Beto. The tapes were then passed on to my sister and finally to me. I practiced at home on and off for over a decade. When I took my first studio class in 2016, I fell in love with this style of dance. Moreover, Zumba was a soul-quenching invitation to reconnect with my Caribbean roots. Since I wanted to explore it further, I attended a training class the next year, where I became certified. Learning the foundations of Zumba gave me a greater appreciation for it. In fact, Zumba reawakened the spirit of dance I so loved as a child.
“When you dance, your purpose is not to get to a certain place on the floor. It’s to enjoy each step along the way.“
