I opened a drawer in my bedroom today and found one of my favorite journals. My daughter gave it to me for Christmas this past year. Needless to say, when I saw it, I felt the warmth of receiving it all over again. It was thoughtful. My family gives me things like journals and books and colorful pens and candles, because they know how much I adore these kinds of gifts. These are the things I use daily for my most important work…self-discovery and cultivating inner peace.
I write in my journal as often as possible. I do it almost every day, but there are times when I don’t. When I do write in my journal, I notice things like being more centered at the start of my day, deeper connection to all things, and access to insights. I’ve been journaling consistently for well over twelve years, and I can say I truly treasure the relationship I’ve cultivated with both my journal and myself, a divine connection.
What I Look for in a Journal…
I look for beautiful journals that invite me to pick them up each day. I buy journals with interesting designs on the cover. Color is another factor. I love pinks and purples and pastel colors. If it’s appealing or eye-catching, it makes a difference to me. Sometimes, journals have quotes or inspirational messages on pages throughout the book or simply one great message on the front like the one my daughter gave me. I use the quote as an affirmation or a springboard to get me going in the morning when I first begin to write.
My favorite Pens…
It matters to me what kind of pen I use. Being left-handed, I love a pen that glides on the page but doesn’t streak. So I use Pentel Energel pens in Purple and sometimes Pink and Paper Mate Ink Joy pens in all colors. Those are my two favorites. I can’t say enough how I love the colors on my pages. I do think it matters how you feel about journaling as to how likely you are to keep writing day after day.
Different Kinds of Journal Writing…
There are so many different ways I write in my journal. The kind of writing I do just depends on the day unless I’m doing a series, like a challenge or following a particular program which I sometimes do.
I write Morning Pages for complete self-expression, which I will explain in more detail in a new post. My Dream Journal sits next to my bed, so I can remember my dreams right away. Gratitude is so powerful that I often reflect in writing what I’m thankful for, and then, at the end of the day, I reflect on something I learned and what I’m looking forward to tomorrow. I have pages for my ideas, plans, and insights. Something magical happens when I write things down. During the course of the day, as life unfolds, the things I write seem to show up in the form of signs and synchronicities. This is one of my favorite things about journaling.
I know for sure that appreciating whatever shows up for you in life changes your personal vibration. You radiate and generate more goodness for yourself when you’re aware of all you have…

In Gratitude…
I’m grateful I found my journal today. As I reflect on my years of writing, I can see how my life has been transformed. The simple healing art of expression has been so powerful. If you’re thinking about beginning a journal journey, consider this your invitation. Look for a journal that you’ll look forward to greeting each day, and find a pen you absolutely love to hold in your hand. Next, set a time in your schedule and find a quiet space.
