Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone in Chicago!

Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.

Neale Donald Walsh

My yoga journey is beginning to take me to places I’ve never been. While I have been to Chicago countless times, I had a few new experiences this visit. Most of all, I explored beyond my comfort zone. In just this one instance, I see and feel how yoga will impact my life.

Before we left for Chicago, I began to get curious about taking a yoga class in the city. It sounded like so much fun. When I asked my husband where we were staying, he began to search for yoga classes, too. After a bit, he mentioned something that sounded wonderful! Yoga in the park. Millenium Park in Chicago is holding free classes on the hour, led by passionate instructors. I was going to do this!

Usually, when my family goes on trips, we have a plan for the day. I was changing this up a bit and, since this class was so early in the morning, it was perfect. The night before, I set my alarm, but I was awake before it ever went off. I was so excited! After I got ready, I went downstairs and made my way to the park.

As I approached the park, I realized how magical this was going to be. I was going to be doing yoga, which I love, outside in nature, which I also love! As I sat on the mat, stretching, I could feel the cool rush of the morning breeze gently brush my face. The sun was shining. What a glorious day! When I lay on the mat, I looked up to notice my view. I have never been in a yoga class like this!

The instructor was wonderful. The practice was great, and I felt so good afterwards. While I walked back to the hotel, I marveled at how I just did yoga outside, and now I was walking among these amazing skyscrapers. Even though Chicago is a city full of buildings, it is still beautiful and enchanting in its own way. My perspective was new. Most of all, I felt something new within me. I did something I never did before, and it changed me.

“Yoga does not just change the way we see things, it transforms the person who sees.”

B.K.S. Iyengar

There is great magic in stepping out of our comfort zone. For all in one moment we feel lost until we find our way. One seemingly small step has the power to move us in new directions. And yoga has moved me!
